Relationship
to Academic Programs and Transferability:
Psyc 1813 was designed to meet
specific student needs either individually or within a program and is designed
to transfer to other colleges and universities. KCC participates in the Illinois
Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide transfer agreement for general
education courses. All colleges and universities participating in IAI agree to
accept a collective "package" of IAI general education courses; transfer of
courses separately is not guaranteed. For more information about IAI, go to
their website at www.itransfer.org and IAI. For the transferability of courses
to specific four-year institutions, go to "MyCreditsTransfer" at www.itransfer.org.
Course
Goals and Objectives:
Upon
completion of this course you will demonstrate an understanding of:
1. psychological research and evidence.
2.
major principles of sensation and perception.
3. the kinds, causes,
prevention, and treatments of psychological disorders and ways of coping with
them.
4. major developmental changes that occur during the main stages of
the lifespan.

the functions and operations of cognitive processes.
General Education
Outcomes:
The general education program at KCC is designed to enable students to acquire communication and reasoning skills at a level reflecting college-level learning. Students who complete the general education program will be able to examine complex topics and apply systematic processes to form conclusions. The specific general education objectives addressed in this course are:
Communication: Students will communicate with precision, clarity, fluency, accuracy, and coherence through their reading, writing, and verbal communications.
Ethical Reasoning:
Students will apply skills in ethical reasoning and come to understand the ways ethical issues affect individual behaviors, individual lifestyles and public life.
Inquiry and Analysis: Students will examine complex topics and apply systematic processes resulting in formed conclusions.
Evaluation:
Chapter
Outcomes:
Chapter Outcomes are available to
students and indicate the knowledge evaluated and in what method it will be
evaluated. Outcomes are assessed through a VARIETY of methods. SOME Outcomes may
be clarified by your instructor through class discussion. Other Outcomes will be
SOLELY THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to learn, through a variety of resources (additional readings, videos, audio powerpoints, other students, your professor,
etc.). Of
course should you have difficulty with ANY particular outcome, you may seek help
from many sources (additional readings, videos, audio powerpoints, other students, your professor,
etc.). You may access the outcomes on my website (http://www.podwika.org) or ask
for a copy.
Quizzes:
This course may include BOTH Pop and
Pre-Announced Quizzes in this class.
POP quizzes will be 1-5 questions, whereas, Pre-Announced Quizzes will be
1-10 questions. Questions may be T/F, MC or Short Answer. Each question is
worth 1 pt.
Quizzes may not be
taken early nor made-up. I-Clickers will be used for quizzes. Once a quiz has started a student may not make up questions missed. The maximum amount of time which will be given once the quiz question is read is 1 min. If you do not enter an answer by this time you will not receive credit. If prior to 55 sec and all students have answered the question, 5 seconds will be given for a final answer and the next question will be given.
Quizzes may occur at any point of
the class period. Quizzes may assess factual as well as deep processing
format. Except for any quizzes on the Neuron & Brain where you will be given
a handout to fill out and use, you will be allowed to use ONLY your notes as new
research supports its use and Open Book, while reducing some anxiety, does
not appreciably increase one's grade and actually results in students not studying as
they should.
Should
class be canceled for any reason or you have a substitute and the substitute is not able to administer the quiz, you should be
prepared to take the quiz the next class period I attend.
(Military Personnel who are called to duty
and can provide proof are allowed to make up Quizzes once the proof is provided
and accepted by the college.) Pre-Announced quizzes will be announced as the term progresses and then placed on the course calendar and class blog. Please make sure to view the calendar & class blog regularly for updates. Should you see an error or have any question concerning the calendar or blog please email me immediately. During quizzes no sunglasses may be worn and baseball hats must be off or worn backwards or sideways. If you are "Thinking" your eyes must be on your own work & IClickers, looking at the ceiling, closed or looking at me. I Clickers should be held in a manner which prevents fellow students from seeing your response. Those with electronic notes must only have their notes or my powerpoints viewable during the quiz and will be required to sit along an aisle.
Activities:
In-Class
Activities are NOT pre-announced and can NOT be made up! Take-Home Activities
are due NO LATER than 5 minutes after your official class time begins on the due
date. I use the clock on on KCC's computer system. Take-Home Activities submitted after this time
through 5 minutes after the next official class session begins will be
considered late & will receive 1/2 the total possible points reduction.
After this time period no credit will be given.
Take-Home Activities may be submitted early. Please follow directions carefully, reread the directions before you submit it to make sure you have completed all that has been directed and in the format directed. Unless otherwise directed, Take-Home activities will NOT be accepted (receive a Zero) unless they are TYPED AND in
the format specified on the Turning
in Homework handout. Of course if you are turning in early you may fix the format errors and turn in for credit. If you turn in on the due date and the format is not corect you may fix the format problems and submit for late credit. For Sustainability reasons and matter of record (to protect you, it tells you it was submitted!), Take-Home Activities should be submitted via Canvas. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to turn your work in electronically. Except for major KCC electronic problems, other electronic problems, your computer or internet service will not be excusable. You will have plenty of time to complete the Take Home asgn and to turn them in. Do it and Turn it in EARLY!! Should you
have to submit your Take-Home Activity as a paper copy you should HAND it to me in class. Do NOT place work under my
door!
Should
class be canceled for any reason or you have a substitute, Take-Home Activities
will be due the next class period I attend.
(Military Personnel who are called to duty
and can provide proof are allowed to make up Activities once the proof is provided
and accepted by the college.)
Final
Grades:
Keep all your
work which is given back to you until your FINAL grade accurately reflects the points you earned. Your grade is determined on the
percentage of total points earned throughout the term.
I will also take into consideration Attendance, Extra Credit Opportunities taken,
Campus Closures, Instructor Illness, CAMPUS technology problems, etc., especially for borderline grades. I use the scale below for letter grades & the KCC definitions for those letter grades.
Percentage/Grade:
90%=
A
This
grade level required a student to demonstrate achievement which is of
OUTSTANDING quality relative to the level necessary to meet course required
outcomes.
80%=B
This grade
level required a student to demonstrate achievement which is of HIGH quality
relative to the level necessary to meet course required outcomes.
70%=C
This grade level required a student to
demonstrate achievement which is of SATISFACTORY quality relative to the level
necessary to meet course required outcomes.
60%=D
This grade
level required a student to demonstrate achievement which is of BELOW
SATISFACTORY quality relative to the level necessary to meet course required
outcomes.
Below
60%=F
This grade
level requires a student to FAIL to demonstrate achievement of the minimum
course required outcomes due to either failure 1) work not completed; or 2) work
at a level of achievement not worthy of credit.
Extra Credit:
You can
earn up to 5%. Extra Credit opportunities and submissions requirements
will be provided throughout the course. Extra Credit Opportunities are listed
on my website.
Extra Credit is due NO LATER than 5 minutes after official start of class on the
date designated in the Class Calendar. Since you have from the beginning of the
term to turn in Extra Credit, NO Late Extra Credit off this list will be accepted. Should
class be canceled for any reason or you have a substitute, Extra Credit will be
due the next class
period I attend. Some terms, I do however have some extra credit opportunities which become available after this date, for example a movies comes in the theater or speaker on campus. I will let you know if I have approved those and what date those will then be due.
Course
Policies:
Attendance:
According to the 2015-16 KCC Student
Catalog, regular attendance at scheduled class sessions is expected. Students
are responsible for notifying their instructors if and why they are unable to
attend any class session if this is required in the course syllabus. Permission
to make up work missed because of absence may be granted at the instructor’s
discretion. My policy on making up work is above in the syllabus! The instructor
has the right to record the grade of "F" for the course or reduce a student's
grade if a student has excessive absences AS DEFINED IN THE INSTRUCTOR'S
SYLLABUS! If you are not actively pursuing the course I will have to report this
to the state and you will be administratively withdrawn from the course.
Classroom
Rules:
Separate Handout
Provided. You will be asked to leave class if you demonstrate these behaviors.
Blog:
Class blogs are
provided for you to review announcements and what occurred in class for anyone
to review but especially those who have been absent so you have no need to call
or email me to find out what happened in class. Blogs are updated ASAP. Blogs are not a substitution for attending class or getting notes from someone. It is just an outline. Make sure you write down oral directions and due dates when announced in class. The blog serves as a reminder and to provide quick links and information for you!
Incompletes:
Incompletes
are granted ONLY if more than 3/4s of the term is completed with a grade of C or
better, due to extreme situation which is NOT under the student's control, can
be officially documented AND it is reasonable the work can be made up in the
time period granted by KCC.
Instructional
Philosophy:
Education = the act or process of imparting or
acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment,
and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life
(Dictionary.com)
Education is NOT repeating a definition from the
text! I do NOT know any employer who will expect this of you! Therefore, I do
NOT evaluate student's ability to memorize definitions from their text.
Psychology is about life and thus it is extremely important for student to be
able to critically think & apply the knowledge of this course to life. It is
important for students to understand concepts and be able to recognize or
provide examples of these concepts in life. This is called Deep Processing. This
ability will allow you to mature by allowing you to reason better & thus
make much better judgments. As the saying goes," If I knew then, what I know
now, I would have done better." I want you to do better with each page you read
in your text, with each class period you attend, with each activity you
complete!
I will evaluate your ability to critically think (handout
provided) about the course concepts. In addition, every course should help
students improve their general skills - writing, technology, oral presentation
etc. This course will provide these opportunities. I will reduce a grade by 10%
for excessive spelling/grammar errors - more than 5 errors in an assignment - so make sure to do a spell/grammar check and make use of the writing labs. I will also be evaluating you on how you follow
directions. Unless specific directions state otherwise, Take-Home Activities MUST be in the Format directed in the "Turning in Homework" handout or it will be reduced for
10%.
College
Policies:
Withdrawals:
When it is necessary to withdraw from a course or from the college, a student
may do so on or before the withdrawal date without
receiving a punitive final grade. Students should
use Change of Schedule forms which are available in Student Services. Students may submit Change of Schedule forms to Student Services or through the mail, but they must be postmarked no later than the withdrawal date.
No withdrawals are allowed by phone. To determine the last date to withdraw with
a grade of "W" in the course, log into KCConnect and click on "my registration
statement" under Academic Profile.
Code of
Conduct:
Students need to
adhere to the Code of Conduct located in the college catalog. Faculty members
have the right to require that a student leave the classroom and not return
until a meeting occurs with the dean of student development. If an instructor
feels a student’s behavior justifies dismissal from a course, program or the
college, a recommendation shall be submitted to the Dean of Student Development
for consideration, recommendation, and action. The Dean of Student Development
will initiate an investigation of reported violations in accordance with college
policy for student due process. The following are SOME of the Code of Conduct rules & regulations. Please make sure to review all of them in the catalog.
Inappropriate attire. Violation
includes wearing clothing which is disruptive to the learning environment. Your
professor will determine whether the attire is disruptive to the learning
environment and let you know.
Disruptive use of electronic devices.
Violation includes use of cell phones, pagers, and other devices which disrupts
the learning environment. Students and visitors are expected to exercise good
judgment and to de-activate such devices any time it may be a disruption.
Due to issues in the past & the Dean of Students recommendation, students will take their cell phones out when they come into class, turn them OFF & place them on top of the table. The
only exception are emergency personnel (Police, Fire, Paramedics etc) who are on
call. If this is the case you need to notify me when you enter the room & of
course your devices should be placed on vibrate. Should your cell phone be
disruptive during class, it goes off in any way, even vibrates loudly or you look at and/or text, the first
occurrence you will be asked to leave for the rest of the class and will be
marked absent and will not receive any points for the day if there were any
gained that day. Should it be disruptive a second time during the semester, you
will be asked to leave, again be marked absent & will not receive points for
the day and you will not be able to return to class until you have met with the
Dean of Student Development for consideration of disciplinary action. The same
procedure will occur for any further cases. If you should have a sick child at
home, dying family member etc. please provide your family with the division
office phone number found at the top of the syllabus. KCC personnel will come
bring you the message that you are needed.
Obstruction of college business and activities. Violations include obstruction or disruption of any operation of the college, including but not limited to teaching, testing, classroom settings, college activities, public service functions, and operation of physical facilities of the college.
Inappropriate conduct/
behavior. Violation includes abusive language and other conduct which is not respectful of others and/or the college. Disruptive activities, misuse of furniture or other property, and inappropriate behavior (includes classroom, activities, and common areas) are violations.
Inappropriate classroom behavior. Violations include failing to follow classroom or program rules estabblished by instructional staff.
Bullying - Violation includes physical, verbal, eletronic, written or video bullying which threatens the mental or physical health or safety of an individual or group.
Laptops may be used in class ONLY
for the notetaking, viewing my powerpoints or being on my website. In addition,
if you are using a laptop you will need to sit in the aisle seats starting with
the closest seat to the front of the classroom on either side. Just like cell
phone usage, if you use your laptop for anything other than designated in this
syllabus, you will be asked to leave for the rest of the class and will be
marked absent and will not receive any points for the day. If any future
occurrences happen, again you will be asked to leave, marked absent, receive no
points and cannot return to class without speaking to the Dean of Student
Development for consideration of disciplinary action.
Seats will be assigned and alternated throughout the term. If you have a laptop you need to let me know as you will assigned to sit along the aisle. No headphones may be worn during class unless you have an official documented need.
Dangerous or Disrespectful
behavior (verbal or physical) will result in an immediate removal of the class
& referral to the Dean of Student Development for consideration of
disciplinary action. Security may also be called for assistance.
Plagiarism is
defined in section 16.2 of the Code of Conduct: "Representing the words or ideas
of another as one's own. Plagiarism includes claiming credit for assignments
completed by someone else." All instances of intentional plagiarism on any major
assignment for this course will lead to the immediate failure of the course with
no opportunity for the student to withdraw. The instance of plagiarism will be
reported to the Dean of Student Development. If the student has a second
instance of plagiarism reported to the Dean of Student Developments the student
may be suspended from the
institution.
To ensure the safety and
well-being of its patrons, children are not permitted in classes, testing,
computer, or tutoring labs or employee work areas. Also, for safety
reasons, children under the age of 14 years cannot be left unattended. This includes KCC campus property and vehicles, satellite centers,
employee work areas, and college event. In the event a child under the age
of 14 years is left unattended, KCC employees will notify campus security and
the dean of student development to locate the parent/guardian and document the incident.
Every effort will be made to locate the parents/guradian before contacting
the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
Email Policy:
To Ensure a student's privacy under all applicable education laws and to facilitate timely interactions, two College-authorized methods of electronic communication exit: KCC-issued student email accounts (using the domain name of .student.kcc.edu) and the Canvas Learning Management System. Students are expected to regularly check their KCC email accounts and Canvas for important incoming communication from the college or from individual instructors. Students understand that emails they send from personal email acounts (other than those listed above) may not be delivered to the KCC recipient, and students should have no expectation that such messages will be answered. If you are emailing me with your KCC google account rather than Canvas, please include your section number in the subject line first and then something specific about the nature of your email. Before emailing me please keep in mind I have your syllabus, FAQs and many other materials on my website to answer questions 24/7. While I typically check my email at least once each day, Sat-Sun I do not check it as often. In addition, I may not be able to due to illness, conferences, etc. Be assured I do check it as often as I can. Keep in mind you can also always call me or stop by my office during off office hours. Please make sure to knock on my door if the door is closed.
Sustainability:
KCC's
sustainability vision is to "be a model of sustainability [and] a leader in
sustainability education, preparing students to successfully negotiate
inevitable challenges and to live happy and constructive lives that serve the
betterment of humanity and future generations." A process is underway to
identify KCC courses and programs which incorporate sustainability concepts.
KCC's sustainability goals may be found in the college catalog. This professor provides many of her matierals online to help with Sustainability efforts and to provide ease of access to materials for students. With these goals
in mind please:
1. Print only what is required. In particular, do
NOT print extensive material from the internet. You may save documents to USB, copy & paste outcomes into
Word or OneNote or bookmark materials.
2. Use the recycling
bins on campus to dispose of unwanted paper, cans and plastic bottles. There is a set to the right of our classroom when you leave only 19
steps away!
3. Please submit assignments via attaching to an email whenever possible.
4. When at home, if you do need to print, please do so double-sided as campus
printers do.

Approximate Topical Calendar: (Activities
Calendar Separate in Canvas)
Pages are ALSO in the Table of Contents of your text and on your Chapter Outcomes. To be the most successful in class, it is best that you prepare by reading ahead for class discussion. I will be clarifying, providing you practice and even extending upon what you read. Reading your text provides you with the foundation first. You will then know what you understand and what you do not understand when you enter class. I can not go over everything in class so there are outcomes which are solely the student's responsibility. Make sure to use your outcomes as your guide on what to read and study.
